BRIEF HISTORY
The Vermilion County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was established on June 29, 1942 under the Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts Law adopted in 1937 by the Illinois General Assembly. Vermilion County marked the 24th Soil and Water Conservation District in Illinois. Today, there are 97 SWCDs in the state of Illinois. Each SWCD is a local governmental body created by state law for the express purpose of promoting the protection and conservation of the county's soil, water and related natural resources. Although each SWCD is a governmental body, it is not a branch of the federal, state or county government. Each SWCD in Illinois partners with agencies like the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), IL Department of Agriculture, IL Department of Natural Resources and IL Environmental Protection Agency and local landowners to provide soil and water conservation assistance for area land users. Vermilion County SWCD works to represent the county in state conservation issues, and make wise use of the county's soil, water and natural resources.
