Education & Outreach

The Vermilion County SWCD also works to provide educational opportunities to the public. Some past and present efforts of the district are listed below:

  • The SWCD partners with the Vermilion County Pheasants Forever Chapter and neighboring county SWCDs as part of Land Use Council 7 to sponsor the Envirothon, a high school environmental education competition. Teams of high school students compete in the subject areas of wildlife, aquatics, soils and forestry. Winning teams can advance to state and national competitions. In 2016, over 30 high school students competed in Paris, IL for the LUC7 regional competition.
  • The SWCD serves as a resource to local schools and can provide educational tools such as an Enviroscape and a Rainfall Simulator for environmental education.
  • The SWCD partners with the Vermilion County Pheasants Forever Chapter to coordinate a free wildlife foodplot seed program for county land users. Seed available includes corn, sunflower, sorghum and soybeans.
  • The SWCD provides monetary support for the annual Lake Vermilion Cleanup Day through a Streambank Cleanup and Lakeshore Enhancement (SCALE) Grant from the IL EPA
  • The SWCD also provides general conservation information, conservation and agricultural tours, and educational workshops on a variety of topics.
